Running with Purpose: George Morse on Mentorship, Black Men Run, and Community Healing

Updated: Apr 5

In a world where representation matters more than ever, George Morse is running his own race—and inviting others to join him. As a Philadelphia native, a seasoned law enforcement officer, and the captain of Black Men Run Philly, George has turned his lived experiences into a powerful platform for mentorship, wellness, and community empowerment.

In Episode 3 of "Beyond the Brand," host Mejire Arijaje sits down with George to explore how purpose, fitness, and mentorship intersect to create lasting change in urban communities.

From the Streets of Philly to the Frontlines of Change George Morse opens up about his upbringing in Southwest Philadelphia, where athletics provided a much-needed escape from the distractions and dangers of inner-city life. Through sports, he developed discipline and community—values that would later define his career in law enforcement and public safety.

Now serving as a sergeant in the sheriff's office with nearly 20 years of experience, George has extended his service beyond the badge. He volunteers in schools, helps develop violence prevention strategies, and consults on public safety programs throughout the city.

Answering the Call to Mentor George's path to mentorship began with a simple invitation: a local educator asked him to speak to students at one of Philadelphia's toughest schools. That moment sparked a fire.

"I realized these kids were just like me," George shares. "They needed someone to relate to, someone to show them a different way."

He soon became an active member of 100 Black Men of Philadelphia, a national organization focused on mentorship, education, health, and economic empowerment. George now helps lead programs like the Saturday Leadership Academy, offering young Black men structure, guidance, and exposure to new opportunities.

Running for Health, Brotherhood, and Legacy In 2015, George discovered distance running. What began as a personal fitness goal quickly evolved into a spiritual and community-centered practice. George has completed four marathons, including the grueling Marine Corps Marathon, and now serves as a national leader within Black Men Run.

Black Men Run is more than a running group—it's a health movement, a brotherhood, and a safe space. It addresses health disparities in the Black community, particularly around cardiovascular disease and diabetes, through consistent movement and community building.

"Movement is medicine," George says. "Running clears your mind, strengthens your body, and gives you time to reflect."

Violence Prevention and Community Leadership George also consults on school safety and violence prevention. He's partnered with organizations like the Philadelphia Eagles and Swag House Run Club to create initiatives such as the Hood to Hood Run Series, bringing healing to communities most affected by gun violence.

"Mentors fill in the gaps where the system falls short," George notes. "Teachers do what they can, but it takes all of us."

LinkedIn, Networking, and the Power of Proximity George emphasizes the importance of intentional networking, especially for young professionals.

"Get a mentor, get active, and use tools like LinkedIn to tell your story," he advises. "You never know who you might inspire—or who might open a door for you."

A Survivor's Story and a Legacy of Service George shares that he is a survivor of gun violence. His experience gives depth to his mission and empathy to his outreach.

"Both lives are changed when a gun goes off—the one holding it and the one hit by it," he says. "Emotional intelligence could save lives."

His ultimate motivation? The legacy of his grandmother, who raised him with love, discipline, and faith. "I just want to make her proud," George says.

leadership isn't about titles—it's about action, consistency, and heart. Whether he's mentoring youth, organizing community runs, or speaking truth in schools, George is moving with purpose.
